I first visited Tall Timber during a brief trip to Melbourne early this year. It had been recommended to me by many as 'a MUST', so of course I had to go. Needless to say, I was impressed beyond words. The menu is phenomenal. I had a mini anxiety attack trying to decide what to order. After literally 30 minutes of deliberation, I decided upon the pumpkin bruschetta which turned out to be an epic decision. Given my amazing first experience at Tall Timber, of course Katie and myself rated it as a priority upon our return trip.
The cafe is located on Commercial Rd, just off Chapel St in Prahran and is easily accessible. Tall Timber attracts crowds from far and wide, which is not surprising given not only the quality of its food, but also the beautiful set-up that includes an outdoor courtyard, and lovely waitstaff. Be warned, if you visit on the weekend, you might have to wait for a table. But take my word, it is well worth the wait.

Katie and I visited Tall Timber along with three other fellow foodies (@_naturalnutrition_, @thealimentalsage and @changeroomfoods), and the cafe was kind enough to treat us to a spread of their best dishes. Head Chef Ryan is nothing short of a culinary genius. His creations are not only a delight to look at, but taste just as beautiful. Each dish is so intricate and bursting with flavour. His cooking style is SO my kind of food - wholesome, balanced dishes with bold flavours. Lots of eggs (there were a total of 12 served in our brunch spread), lots of salmon, lots of sourdough and a whole lot of deliciousness.
For me, this was one of the standout dishes, as it was pretty much a plate of all my favourite foods. It's a new addition to the Tall Timber menu, and a very good one to say the least. Beetroot cured ocean trout on smashed peas, radish, black tahini, poached eggs and a mint, parsley, pistachio and almond pesto. It don't get much better then that! The salmon was cured to perfection and melted in your mouth, working beautifully with all the other elements. If you love salmon and eggs as much as I do, I HIGHLY recommend this dish!
The balsamic tomatoes with kale pesto, burrata cheese and basil on sourdough was another delicious dish. The tomatoes were fresh, juicy and full of flavour, and worked beautifully with the richness of the cheese. The flavours were similar to the classic Caprese salad, but better. Much better. Also a hit was the cured salmon gravlax with smashed peas, poached eggs, beetroot relish, feta and housemade baguette croutons.
If i have to be honest, I have been skeptical of the new 'breakfast salad' craze that has emerged. For some reason a big bowl of kale for breakfast just doesn't excite me. This, however, was no ordinary breakfast salad. For starters, it was served on toast (mandatory, in my opinion). Sautéed kale, asparagus, green beads with goats curd, almonds and poached eggs changed my opinion on greens for breakfast. The crunch of the almonds and the creaminess of the goats curd added a whole new level of texture and flavour. Pictured behind is the roast pumpkin bruschetta with poached eggs, feta, hummus and dukkah. A standout dish for me, and the reason I came back to Tall Timber for more.
And now for breakfast dessert, as I like to call it. First we have the bircher muesli with poached pear, rosewater, pistachio, figs and cacao crumble. Absolutely divine. The flavours were reminiscent of turkish delight, and the pear was poached to perfection, so soft. The banana and coconut chia pudding with grilled figs was also a winner. I've never been a big fan of chia pudding but this is definitely something I could get around. I loved the addition of mashed banana throughout the pudding which added a delicious textural element.
The meal was faultless. The love and effort that goes into each dish really shows, with every element reflective of the care that's been put into it. Head Chef Ryan says, "you eat with your eyes before your mouth", and the food at Tall Timber is a true testament to this. I think the photos make this pretty obvious! If you are in Melbourne, this is one place you do not want to miss. And Melbournites, I truly hope you are taking advantage of this gem.
