Burnt Orange is somewhat of a dining institution in Sydney. The iconic restaurant is situated on a wrap around veranda with beautiful views of Sydney Harbour. Burnt Orange is open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, and whilst all menus look divine, being the breakfast fanatics that we are we of course decided to go for breakfast. The breakfast menu is extensive, which needless to say made our selection process rather difficult. It features both your classic breakfast options as well as some more unique dishes thrown into the mix. After much deliberation, we decided on three savoury dishes, coincidently all containing eggs in some form. Actually, not such a coincidence, let's be honest...
The food was nothing short of exquisite. As was the crockery. Have I mentioned I am a sucker for good looking plates?

The breakfast bruschetta was a fantastic take on a classic. The dish consisted of vine tomato & avocado salsa with a poached egg on grilled sourdough. It’s amazing how good, quality ingredients can bring together a seemingly simple combination. The juiciness of the tomatoes, with the creaminess of the avocado, the perfectly poached egg and crispy bread all worked together beautifully.
I can never go past trout on a menu, so ordering the breakfast board was a no-brainer. House-smoked trout, grilled haloumi, fresh avocado, soft-boiled egg, pesto, some kind of hummus (possibly sun-dried tomato) and Avoca brown bread made for a plate of perfection. All the elements combined together on a slice of the bread made for a mouthful of heaven. The trout in particular was exceptional. With a subtle smoky flavour, it literally just melted in your mouth.
Our third and final dish was the sautéed forest mushrooms served on sourdough with hazelnuts, thyme, ricotta and a soft-poached egg. A winning flavour combination, the dish was faultless. Slightly more indulgent than the other dishes with the creamy ricotta and juicy mushrooms, but delicious nonetheless.
Burnt Orange is a place for those occasions where you want to go somewhere a little bit special. The food is exceptional and there is truly something for everyone. It is clear how much thought has gone into each dish, with each element just bursting with flavour. A combination of great food and a stunning setting makes Burnt Orange the ideal place to share a wonderful dining experience with your loved ones. Oh and did I mention the beautiful crockery...
